There’s more to this ‘Secret’ stuff than wishful thinking, I’m finding out. Sorting out your desires is a very tricky thing. Do I love puzzles for their beauty, or to prove to myself I’m smart? How many neurotic desires lurk in us, sabotaging our time and success? Just thinking about what to ask for (even not assuming it can be granted) helps reduce your inventory of desires, which itself, as Buddhists believe, is a good thing. Repressing desire isn’t, of course, because it covers up the truth. Not talking sexual stuff so much as personal wishes and goals and greediness and arrogance. And desiring desirelessness … that’s very dangerous stuff. Knot.
